The shady, leafy gardens date from the 19th century and retain the
original conventual layout and the romantic style characteristic of
their period. Most outstanding amongst the more than 100 species
in the Pazo gardens and woods are the camelias, box hedges
and magnolias.

The cloister contains the most relevant example of Spanish geometric
gardening from the religious point of view, and the most valuable
feature of the Pazo. This work of art, cut out of a box hedge, is
outstanding for both its symbolism and its longevity (four centuries).
It is trimmed twice a year and still shows clearly some of the allegorical
designs. Others remain enigmatic, perhaps for ever.
